Unknowingly bringing unrealistic photos to your Stylist?
If you’re like me, you save countless hairstyle pictures to your phone! I literally spend hours scrolling on Pinterest to find my next big change. But let’s be real, is Pinterest misleading all of us? I mean, you bring in a picture for your Stylist and expect to walk out looking like Beyoncé, and then wonder why you didn’t. Have you ever thought about the process behind those photos? I’d love to take the opportunity to educate you about this.
Here are some key factors that come into play when saving those Pinterest inspired photos. They include, the model’s type of hair, the filters they used on the photo, the type of lighting they were in, the potentially professional photo-shop that took place, their facial features, their skin tone, the amount of time the process took, what their hair looked like before the after was posted, and of course the financial cost to the process. As a Stylist, I am here to guide you, and that also means being real with you.
So, lets talk hair! When looking at Pinterest photos how many times do you see a picture and they have super fine hair? Never, right?! That’s because most of these models have hair extensions. Already, we’re given false hope because unless we add hair extensions to our style, we won’t have an outcome similar to theirs.
Now how many of you use filters, or Photoshop? I know I do! Most of my pictures are either touched up with Photoshop or filters. I usually spend most of my time trying to find the best lighting, too. You can bet your ass those photos have hours of work done by experts such as celebrity hairstylists, photographers, and editors. Their job is to make sure everything looks perfect. But that’s not authentic!
Another hilarious misconception is the amount of time these outcomes actually take! Unlike Guy Tang, we don’t have six to eight hours to do these transformations!! The only way to know if what you’d like is going to happen the way you’re expecting is by scheduling a consultation. Without a proper consultation it’s like going into a test without reviewing anything. You go in blind. When you study and prepare, your results meet your expectations. I truly encourage all of you to set up a consultation beforehand, so you and your Stylist can both have the same expectations.
