Preparing for your hair appointment the right way can make a big difference in the outcome of your color, cut, or style. Whether you’re looking for a transformation or the same color as your last appointment, here’s exactly how to arrive so your stylist can deliver the hair of your dreams!

Bring Plenty of Inspiration Photos
Bringing inspiration photos is one of the best ways to communicate what you want. Even if you struggle to describe your ideal style verbally, photos can instantly create clarity.
What to bring:
-2–3 photos of styles or colors you love
-1 photo of what you don’t want
-Photos from multiple angles
-A picture of your own hair on a good day
This helps your stylist understand your goals, your taste, and your expectations which will make your consultation smooth and you and your stylist will be on the same page! Take our short matchmaking quiz to find our best stylist suited for you, your personality, and your style!

Come With Clean Hair
One of the top hair appointment tips stylists recommend: arrive with clean hair. You don’t need a perfect blowout, but avoid heavy product buildup or several days without washing. Ideally, wash your hair 24–48 hours before your appointment.
Why do we ask this? It helps our stylists see your true texture and density better, colors lift and process more evenly, and make your haircut more precise. A little styling product is okay, just skip heavy oils, dry shampoo buildup, or stiff hairspray.

Set Aside Enough Time for Your Appointment
Great hair takes time, especially during the holiday season or for color transformations. Rushing can affect both your results and your experience.
Plan to arrive 5–10 minutes early, stay for the full length of your appointment, add a buffer afterward in case additional time is needed. When you’re relaxed and not stressed about time, the whole experience feels better and stylists can take the time your look deserves.

Don’t Wear Your Favorite Outfit
Even though salons use capes and take precautions, hair appointments involve water, color, foils, and products. Choose clothes that are comfortable, easy to remove (avoid turtlenecks and hooded sweatshirts), not too delicate or expensive and darker in color, if possible.

Be Completely Honest About Your Hair History
This might be the most important step. Your stylist isn’t judging you, they simply need accurate information to keep the integrity of your hair and achieve your desired look.
Tell your stylist if you’ve used box-dye, henna or vivid colors, gotten highlights at home, used strong chemical treatments, or experienced damage or breakage.
Honesty helps prevent surprises during processing and ensures your stylist creates the safest, most effective plan.
