One of the most common questions people have about haircare is how often you should get your hair trimmed. A common misconception is that trimming your hair will cost less than a haircut. Trims and haircuts are the same service because it takes the same amount of time, it is the same investment, and even requires more precision than a haircut. It does not depend on how much hair is cut off. Whether you’re wanting to grow your hair or make the big chop, regular trims are essential for keeping your hair healthy and looking its best.
Why Trim Your Hair?
Regular trims help to maintain the overall health and appearance of your hair. Here are some key reasons why trimming is important:
Prevents Split Ends
Split ends occur when the hair shaft splits into two or more fragments. Trimming removes these split ends, preventing them from traveling up the hair shaft and causing more damage.
Promotes Hair Growth
While trimming doesn’t directly make your hair grow faster, it does contribute to healthier hair growth. By removing the damaged ends, your hair is less prone to breakage, allowing it to grow longer over time.
Maintains Style and Shape
For those with blunt bobs or curly hair, regular trims help maintain the shape and structure of your hairstyle, keeping it looking well-maintained.
Improves Hair Texture
Trimming can help improve the texture of your hair, making it smoother and more manageable by getting rid of rough, damaged ends.
How Often Should You Trim Your Hair?
The frequency of hair trims can vary depending on several factors, including your hair type, its condition, and your styling habits. Here’s a general guide to help you determine how often you should get your hair trimmed:
Every 6-8 Weeks
For most people with average hair growth and healthy hair, scheduling a trim every 6 to 8 weeks is recommended. This time frame allows enough time for hair to grow, while also preventing split ends from becoming a major issue.
Long Hair
If you’re growing your hair out, you might be tempted to skip trims. However, even with long hair, it’s important to trim every 8-12 weeks to maintain healthy ends and prevent breakage.
Short Hair
Shorter hairstyles often require more frequent trims to maintain their shape and style. Depending on how quickly your hair grows and how precise you want to keep your look, aim for a trim every 4-6 weeks.
Damaged Hair
If your hair is damaged or prone to split ends, more frequent trims may be necessary. In such cases, consult with your hairstylist to determine a trimming schedule that works best for you. Consider getting our new Hydrating Haircut or Hydrating Curly Haircut to add moisture back into your hair as well as trimming the damaged ends.
Curly Hair
For our curly girls, our hairstylists recommend coming in about every 3 months for a haircut. This allows your curls to stay healthy and touch up the shape and length of your hair. After your first curly haircut with us, we also have curly express haircuts that are quick 45 minute appointments. Curly express haircuts do include a quick cut to reshape your curls, but does not include a wash and style. This service is helpful for those who are always on the go!If you’re unsure about how long to wait in between appointments or what type of haircut you should get, book a consultation with one of our hairstylists and discuss any questions or concerns you may have!
Signs You Need a Trim
While there is a general haircutting schedule you can follow, there are signs that indicate it’s time for a trim:
Visible Split Ends
If you notice split ends, it’s best to trim them before they worsen.
Tangled Ends
Tangles and knots at the ends of your hair can indicate damage that requires trimming.
Lack of Style Hold
If your hairstyle doesn’t hold its shape or looks frizzy despite styling, it may be due to damaged ends needing a trim.
While the exact frequency of hair trims varies from person to person, regular trims are necessary for maintaining healthy hair. By understanding your hair type and its condition, you can determine a trimming schedule that keeps your hair looking its best, promoting growth, and minimizing damage. Consult with one of our hairstylists for personalized advice on how often you should get your hair trimmed based on your specific hair needs, concerns, and goals.
